TALK OF PEACE MOVE ROOSEVELT RETURNING SERVICE CHIEFS CONFER (Elec. To], Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Reed. Aug. 24, 2.30 p.m.) WASHINGTON. Aug. 23. Gravely concerned about the situation in Europe, President Roosevelt and the Secretary of State, Mr. Cordell Hull, are hastening to Washington where the question of the United States making a peace move probably will be discussed to-morrow.
The acting Secretary of Stale, Mr. Sumner Welles, has advised 1 Americans not to travel to Europe. Pie added that the American Embassies in France and: Poland had warned nationals to leave. A second extraordinary conference of army, navy and’ civil departmental chiefs was held to-day to discuss American moves after an outbreak of war. President Roosevelt has ordered the cruiser Tuscalosa to put in at Sandy Hook, New Jersey, at 8 a.m. to-morrow. A special train With a White House staff will be waiting, so that he can work as the train speeds to Washington.
A report from Cannes slates that the United States consular authorities have advised tourists to prepare to depart from the vicinity of the Italian frontier.
CONTACT IN LONDON (Reed. August 24, 3 p.m.) LONDON, August 23. The American Ambassador, Mr. J. P. Kennedy, returned by air from the south of France to-day. He spent an hour in the Foreign Office.
