MAORI TEAM ARRIVES
RUGBY CHALLENGE MATCH
INTERNATIONAL PLAYERS PRINCE OF WALES CUP A day earlier than they expected, the members of the Te Waipounamu Maori football team arrived at Gisborne at noon to-day and were met by- ’members of the Poverty Bay Rugby Union. Mr. N. Parafa is in charge of the team. ■ 1 Te Waipounamu are the challengers tor the Prince of Waleis Cup and are to play the holders, Tairawhiu, sy the Oval on Saturday. The Tairawhiti players ar e selected from the Bay of Plenty, Bast Coast, Poverty Bay and Hawke’s Bay districts and Will be captained by the famous Maori forward, Tori Reid, an All Black in 1935-36-37 and also a Maori international player. ■The team will include three sons of the former English international player, F. Jackson, now a resident of the East Coast. Two of the brothers, Everard and . Selwyn Jackson, will play in the forwards and the trurd, T. Wi Rtpa, will play in the back division.
The challenging side is selected from Maoris in the South Island arid includes Maori All Black players and a NeW Zealand University player in Steele, the Otago winger. The team is a strong one and is expected to offer a .strong challenge for the coveted trophy. ' The New Zealand selector, Mr. E. McKenzie, Wairarapa, arrived at Gisborne yesterday and will remain for the Maori match. Mr. T. French, Poverty Bay, and N. Parata, South Island, selectors for the New Zealand Maori team which play the touring Fijian team in Hamilton, also will be present at the match. The Tairawhiti team will assemble in Gisborne to-morrow. The Poverty Bay area appointment board has approved of the appointment Of Mr. At E. Ingram as the referee for the match on Saturday. •'
