BRITISH LEAVE CANCELLED HONG KONG TENSION RESPONSE BY VOLUNTEERS VIRTUAL WAR FEELING (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Reed. Aug. 25, 10 a.m.) LONDON, Aug. 24. A report from Shanghai says that all leave for British troops has been cancelled. It iis reported that over 10,000 Japanese troops 'have arrived in the Shanghai area. Riots have occurred because of the high cost of rice resulting from the currency collapse. Many persons have been arrested.
'Further Shanghai reports state that it is estimated that 6000 Japanese have landed in the Shanghai area. The nature of the intended action, is undisclosed.
The occupation of the International Settlement is suggested, (but it is indicated that Japan stayed her hand due to the dilemma as to where she stands under the Russo-German agreement. The Shanghai correspondent of the British United Press says it is reliably stated that Japan has assured Britain that the authorities have been instructed to keep the anti-British movement under control. The British admit that the situation has improved. Calls For Co-operation The Japanese commander, Admiral Yamada, interviewed, appealed to third 'Powers to co-operate in the earliest restoration of peace. He gave the impression that Japan was' eager to deal reasonably with foreign, interests. Reports from Hong Kong state that the British colony there is virtually on a wartime footing in the face of a complete Japanese blockade. The Government has appealed to all British subjects over 41 to enrol in, the air raid precautions, fighting forces and civilian defence services. The response has been magnificent and the actual mobilisation of them is the only additional step necessary.
British women and children have heen advised to leave border towns. The steps taken are precautionary, due to the European situation and not dife to fear of Japanese action. It is reported (from Chungking that Russia is massing troops on the Manchukuo border.
