THEFT AND FRAUD
ENGLISHMAN GAOLED
ONE YEAR’S REFORMATIVE
(Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, this day.
For offences committed while on probation, John Shelly KennardDavis, aged 25, an Englishman, was given reformative detention by- Mr. F. H. Levien, S.M., in the Police Court, yesterday.
The accused was charged with stealing a suit- of clothes and a pair of shoes valued .at till 18s from a boarding-house, incurring a debt of £7 9s for board and obtaining £3 from a hotel proprietor toy means of a valueless cheque. He pleaded guilty to alt charges.
Tire police produced l a statement in which the accused said 1 he had been working om the State housing job at Orakei as; a carpenter’s labourer. He left the job and walked to the city, booked in at the Star Hotel under the name of “J. P. Wilson, London.” That might he went to a, party at Remuera, obtaining liquor from a hotel porter by signing for it and l also obtaining £3 from the hotel proprietor by giving a cheque. He stole the clothing from a boardinghouse where he previously resided.
The. magistrate sentenced 1 /the accused to reformative detention for a period of next exceeding 12 months.
