POLICY CHANGE PLEA

COMPULSORY TRAINING NEWSPAPER’S APPEAL (Per Press Association.) NEW PLYMOUTH, this day. The Taranaki Daily News published to-day a full page open appeal to the Government to reconsider its decision against compulsory military service.

The appeal gives full credit to the Government fbr the present energetic defence policy, but says this is not enough and .that national character is as much involved as a purely defence issue. The article maintains that the calibre of youth is deteriorating for various reasons, and that careful investigations among a cross-section of Taranaki opinion reveal a distinct change of attitude towards compulsory training. The belief is expressed that public opinion would support an alteration in the Governments policy and suggests this should strengthen the hand of the Government in making the change.
