RELIEVING MAGISTRATE

MR. J. H. LUXFORD, S.M. GISBORNE APPOINTMENT Advice was received in Gisborne this morning that Mr. J. 11. Luxford, S.M., Wellington had been appointed to Gisborne temporarily as the indisposition of the resident magistrate, Mr. E. L. Walton, was expected to prevent his early return to his magisterial duties. In 1929 Mr. Luxford was appointed for a period, Chief Justice of Samoa. He was admitted to the Bar in 1913 and practised for a time in Te Awamutu. Enlisting with the New Zealand Main Body, Mr. Luxford •saw service in Egypt and France and was seriously wounded at Gravenstafel in October, 1917, and subsequently invalided out of the army. He rose to the rank of major and was mentioned in dispatches from France by the late Earl Haig for gallantry in the First Battle of the Somme. After the war Mr. Luxford practised in Hamilton, and in April, 1928, he was appointed a stipendiary magistrate.

Mr. Luxford is expected to visit Wairoa on August 31 and afterwards he will come to Gisborne.
