A ‘report from Bonneville Salt Flats, Utah, says -that the British racing motorist, John Cobb, broke the world’s- land speed record with an official speed of 368.85 miles an hour.

On the first run lie averaged 370.75 miles an hour and on the return run. 366.57 miles an hour. Cobb also broke the kilometre record with a. speed! of 369.74 mile? an hour, the former record being 350.7. He said the wind bothered- him Slightly as he reached the south: end.

“I slowed down slightly as I knew I had gone fast enough northward for the record so I wanted to be sure I would get back,” said Cobb. He added: "My motto is safety first even at six miles a minute.”

Cobb indicated that he might try to set a still faster time.
