SIR JAS. CARROLL

GALLERY PORTRAIT COMMISSION COMPLETED DISPLAY IN GISBORNE P.B. DISTRICT TRIBUTE After several months’ work on -the part of (Mr. H. Linley Richardson, of Palmerston North, the portrait of the late -Sir James Carroll has been completed and delivered to the committee of Gisborne residents responsible (for raising the -funds -invested in the picture. It is the intention of the committee to 'dispatch the portrait to Wellington within a few days for submission to the trustees of the National Art Gallery, with a view to its acceptance as a -contribution to the collection, of studies of famous iNew Zealand public men.

The funds for the -painting were all subscribed by Gisborne organisations and residents, with the exception of a few donations fre-m men and -women living in other parts of New Zealand who were on terms ! of intimate friendship with Sir James Carroll during his long and illustrious life.

Arrangements for Exhibition

- The painting is now housed in the Cosmopolitan Club, but arrangements have (been made with the management of Messrs. Adair -Bros., Limited, to display it against a suitable background in that firm’s show window for a few days as from to-morrow evening. Those who have inspected it declare it to be a fine example of portraiture, illuminated -by the (breezy personality of the subject, and reproducing for future -generations a close study of the features of the late “Timi Kara.” The expression is entirely characteristic, and will (be recognised by all who had the privilege of acquaintance with the late Maori statesman.

The committee which raised the funds for the painting considered that contributors should have the opportunity of seeing the work in. Gisborne before it is submitted to the trustees of the National Art Gallery, and -this accounts for the arrangements for local exhibition. ’Much -credit in connection with the memorial is due to Mr. D. J. Barry, chairman of the committee, and the Cosmopolitan and Kahutia clubs, which assisted in sponsoring the painting o'f the portrait. The services o-f iMr. Chas. Ambridge, as honorary secretary, have been invaluable to the organisers.

Practically all the contributions promised to the Carroll portrait fund are noiw in hand, and the committee is engaged in clearing up its accounts, with a view to making a final payment to the artist. Those few -whose contributions -are outstanding are being approached with a reminder, in order that the financial aspects of the transaction may be concluded as satisfactorily as the portrait commission itself.
