ROSS SHIELD RUGBY

SCHOOLS’ COMPETITION HASTINGS IN LEAD (Special to the Ilernld.) WAIROA, this day. As a -.result of yesterday’s' play in the Ross Shield competition, Hastings is now assured of winning the trophy, the points at the conclusion of yesterday’s games being: Hastings, 7; Wairoa, 4; Dfnnevirke, 3; Central Hawke’s Bay, 2; and Napier 0. The chief match yesterday was the clash between Wairoa and Hastings, for by beating Hastings and winning their match to-day Wairoa wouldhave been assured of the shield. There was, therefore, great excitement when these two teams took the field, and there was a good crowd at Lambton Square to see the match. It proved to be the best seen in this year's series, and resulted in a draw, both sides scoring three points. In the first half Hastings had much the better of the game, and the half ended with Hastings three points up, the result of a mark in front of the posts. In the second half, however, ! W-airoa camp to light with a great I rally, and was frequently knocking I at the door. The Hastings defence was 1 sound, however, and only once let Wairoa through, the try being unconverted. The results of yesterday’s games were:— Central Hawke’s Bay 6, Napier 0; Hastings 6, Dannevirke 3; Dannevirke 8, Central Hawke’s Bay 3; Hastings 3 drew with Wairoa 3.
