CRUELTY TO COW

SIX MONTHS’ GAOL LABOURER SENTENCE D Charged that at Reporoa on January 23 he cruelly ill-treated a cow by striking it on the hocks with a spade James Gothorp, aged 36, a labourer, was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment by justices in the Rotorua Police Court. The case was first brought to the notice of the police by a farmer of Reporoa, who had. employed Gothorp as a milker, and who found a number of his cows wandering about the paddock with their tails partly severed. Accused disappeared after this discovery and was not seen again until interviewed by the police a considerable time later. When charged he pleaded not guilty. In evidence the farmer described accused as a very bad-tempered man.
