TRACK AND STABLE

VALU LU IS WELL

PAKURANGA SHOWING

RAN CREDITABLE FOURTH TOOLEV STREET IN SOUTH (By "Trenton.") Val Lit should bo worth keeping in mind from now on. He was a long way back in tho early part of the Sylvia Park Handicap and finished very fast into fourth place. He was conceding weight to tho three horses that finished in front of him, besides giving them a start, and his effort indicates that he will soon make a return to the winning list. K. Mateer has Val Lu in great heart, and this gelding may not take long to win his way out of hack class. To Ride Halley The successful amateur horseman ,Mr. G. G., Beatson, will have the mount on Halley, who is to contest the Duke of Gloucester Cup at New Plymouth. Silver Sight Retired After starting on no fewer than 151 occasions, Silver Sight has been retired from the turf. Pie won over £3OOO in stakes. Three To Go Five Takanini horses, Maxam, Saccone, Solitary, The Dozer and Namara. are nominated for the Combined Hunt meeting which opens at New Plymouth at the end of the month. Unless present intentions are altered, only the first-named three will make the trip. Left at Riccarton H. Rama did not bring Tooley Street back from Riccarton after the Grand National meeting, as he intends to leave the gelding there until after the New Zealand Cup, for which he is to receive a special preparation. The o'her members of Rama’s team, Miss Appellant and Tane Pango, have been placed in D. J. Arnott’s charge. This trainer has also taken over Gay Belle, ‘who in future will be trained at Ellerslie. Came Home Well Black Musk drew attention to his future prospects by the solid manner in which he came home to get third money in the Jellicoe Handicap at the Pakuranga Hunt meeting at Ellerslie. If produced at the Avondale meeting next month Black Musk should be worth following, especially if the ground is soft. Pic has previously won on the suburban course, and the race he had at Ellcrslie will sharpen him up for future engagements. Should Hold Her Own When raced in hack sprint events last season Bronwen displayed abundance of speed, winning on three occasions. She went one better last Saturday when she registered a clear-cut win in the Admiralty Handicap at Ellcrslie. She took the lead at the end of the first furlong, and although challenged at the home turn she drew away and won in convincing style. Summed up on her latest victory, Bronwen is likely to hold her own with the best of our sprinters in the future. An Appreciation In appreciation of Mr. B. G. Rutherford's action in remounting Gold Wren in the Lincoln Steeplechase at Riccarton and completing the course for third prize of £7O, Mr. R. Brown, Invercargill, in whose colours the horse races, has presented a gold watch to Mr. Rutherford. Prospective Bargain Purchased last month for 25gns. a 1 at the dispersal sale of 'he late Mr. W. Higgins’ thoroughbreds. Royal Star TI. winner of tho Wairarapa Cup, is making good progress at Hastings and. providing he stands up to his work, he should prove a bargain to his new owner, Mrs. M. E. Fleetwood, Hastings. Returning to New Zealand The Iliad colt .Miltiades, who has been nominated for the O'ago Hunt Club’s meeting, is now on his return to New Zealand. Miltiades raced last season as a two-year-old at the Syuney meetings and recently won over five and a-half furlongs. Miltiades was bred and is owned by Mr. R. C. B. Greenslade.
