VALUE OF PACTS ANTI-COMINTERN TREATY ASSURANCES OF AXIS CONCERN IN PEKIN RUSSIAN DRIVE IN CHINA (Elrc. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Reed. Aug. 23 12 noon.) LONDON. Aug. 22. A Tokio message states that the Japanese Ministers conferred on the new situation arising out of the RussoGerm.au agreement. A Pekin message says that Russia is expected -to drive towards China no-w that she is free of Europe. The opinion is expressed that Japan has learned a bitter lesson as to the value of the anti-Comintern assurances. A Chungking message states that the Chinese expect strong Russian support. The Soviet is already sending reinforcements to Manchukuo. A message from Rome states that the Japanese Ambassador is calling on the Italian Foreign Minister, Count Ciano, as the Russo-German agreement wrecks the plans for Japan’s adherence to the Axis. The Berlin correspondent of the Associated Press of America says that well-informed circles are unable to say how the pact between Russia and Germany will affect ihe antiComintern Pact under which Germany, Italy and Japan are pledged to Oppose international f ßolshevism, but it. is emphasised that all eventualities have been foreseen.
The German-Japanese relations have been taken into consideration. Basically, Poland’s position appeared to be greatly weakened for no matter what the western democracies might nov/ arrangp, Poland could not expect help from the east.
