NEW YORK. Aug. G. New York is involved in the queerest. crime-hunt of its chequered history. Louis Lepke Buchalter, branded as the world’s most dangerous industrial racketeer, cannot be caught, though every big crime agency in America has been after him for the past 18 months. , Cutting short his vacation, the District Attorney. Mr. Dewey, has returned to New York to increase the reward for Buchaltcr’s capture to £SOOO. “What makes ihe ease so pressing.’* said Mr. Dewey, "is that two perfectly innocent citizens have been murdered because they were mistaken for people involved in Buchaltcr’s gang war.” Lepke, as Buchalter is known, and Jacob Shapiro were indicted two years ago. Shapiro is now serving a term in prison. Those two men were leaders in bakery, teamster, and garment workers’ rackets, in which levies were charged every manufacturer for the privilege of doing business.
