Play for «the Ross Shield, the premier primary schools’’ Rugby trophy in Hawke’s Bay commenced in Wniroa yesterday and the standard of football generally was fairly high. This is the first time the competition has been held in Wairoa and five teams —Hastings, Dannevirke, Central Hawke’s Bay, Napier and Wairoa —are competing. Altogether four matches were played and at the close of the first round Hastings were leading, with Wairoa second. In the first game of the competition, Wairoa 10 beat Napier (i, while in the game which followed Hastings comfortably beat Central Hawke's Bay bv 20 uoints to three.
Playing in the afternoon Wairoa drew with Dannevirke, no score being registered, and Hastings had an easy victory over Napier by 13 points to. nil. The position of the teams after the first day’s play is as follows: — Hastings, 4 points: Wairoa, 3 points: Dannevirke, l point; Central Hawke's Bay and Napier, nil. Results of to-day's matches:— Wairoa 10. Napier 0. Hastings 20, Central Hawke's Bay 3. Wairoa 0, Dannevirke 0. Hastings 13, Napier 0.
