TRACK AND STABLE
LA VIE IN GUINEAS UNLIKELY STARTER PURE GOLD SCORES RELATED TO HALL MARK (By "Trenton.”) Mrs. 'S. L. Parsons has La Vie engaged in the Wanganui Guineas, but the Night Raid filly is unlikely to contest the event, as she has not been up long after a spell. Needs Roomy Track Ruatiti will not be seen out at the Wanganui meeting, as although he looks in great heart he has clone very little work. The Limond gelding is such a long strider that he needs a track like Trentham or Ellerslic to show of his best. When he is wound up Ruatiti is likely to add further to his winning record, as he is well above the average. Lowcnbcrg Well Lowenberg was given a few days’ let-up after his return from Riccarton, hut is back in work looking bright and well on it. From appearances the Lord Quex gelding should be much improved by the time tho Wanganui meeting comes round. Very Fit Horse Baron Bold never looked better than he is at present, and he promises to be very hard to beat in the Bracelet events at the Combined Hunt Club’s meeting at New Plymouth.
Possesses Plenty of Speed Valvern still continues to show abundance of speed in her trials at Ellerslic, but lacks stamina. She can go with the best for a few furlongs and will only need to develop better staying ability in order to win races over a sprint distance.
Has Not Been Hurried Since joining T. Tucker’s team at Ellerslie, Royal Huntress has not beer, overtaxed, though she will be ready to race at the spring meetings. This filly displayed promising speed in a work-out over four furlongs during the week, and a maiden event should not be beyond her later on. Solidly Built Merry March, winner of the first division of 'he Longbeach Hack Handicap at Riccarton, is a solidly-built gelding by Nightmarch from Kilmiss, and after being raced by Mr. C. Louisson, Palmerston North, for whom he was trained at Riccarton by P. Mason, he was sold to his present owner fo. 90 guineas. Shortly after the sale Merry March showed promise of an early return by filling a second placing, but soreness then came against him, and he had to be put aside. He was recommissioned only a few weeks ago, and to win a race with a restricted preparation stamps him as a very useful galloper. He is quite sound in the meantime, and if he can be kept in his present order he will win some important races, especially over a distance, as his breeding suggests stamina. His dam, Kilmiss. was by Kilboy from Marty by Martagon. Mar'y’s other progeny included Hyllus, Hymarty, Early Dawn and Rascal.
Hall Mark’s Brother Hall Mark’s brother, Pure Gold, a candidate for the A.J.C. and Victoria Derbies and the two Cups, recorded his first win when he justified his hot favouritism for the first division of the Crimea Trial at Caulfield last ■Saturday week.
He has 6.9 in ‘he Caulfield Cup ana 6.11 in the Melbourne* Cup, but J. Holt, his trainer, is hopeful that first of 'dl he will develop form good enough to warrant a trip to Sydney fo - +he A.J.C. Derby. “But we shall have to see how he f~re- in tvs next race or two before
con form o definite opinion concerning his ability,” added Holt. Hop was showered with congratulations after the race, for Pure Gold’s win followed closely the announcement that Holt had been appointed to train the Duke of Kent’s horses in Australia.
Pure Gold was ridden perfectly by little Joe Gilmore, who is regarded as the Lappin of Melbourne apprentices.
