VERGE OF BREAKDOWN
BRITISH ARMY OFFICER PRISONER OF JAPANESE (Reed. August 21, 9 a.m.) LONDON, August 18. Official despatches from Pekin reveal that Lieutenant-Colonel Spears, the British Embassy military attache, whom the Japanese have been holding on charges of espionage, is on the verge of a breakdown. He has been living on bread and eggs, because the other food given him was unsuitable. The officer is not exercised, because the Japanese have not transmitted to London his query whether he, as a colonel, could walk with a private as an escort. : Cbloncl Spears, except for the interpreter’s brief daily visit, is virtually in solitary confinement. The two Canadian mission priests, Fathers Courchesne and Renaud, who were arrested by the Japanese on suspicion of anti-Japanese activity, have been released.
