SERIOUS EFFECTS
SEVERE CONDITIONS MAN AAV AT U FLOODING HEAVY FLOCK LOSSES (Per Press Association.) PALMERSTON N., this day. The severe winter conditions have caused heavy mortality among lambs in /the Manawatu district and the continued period of cold and unsettled weather since the beginning of July is having very serious effects. Flocks have suffered greatly, and the losses have been accentuated by the flooding of .thousands of acres of land carrying large numbers of breeding ewes, which were in tire middle of the lambing season when the visitation occurred. Apart from this, a large quantity of surface water has caused losses. The present period is one of the worst experienced 1 for many yeai-s in tire lamibing industry. Parts of the Lower Kairanga, which have never before been flooded, last week were subjected to inundation.
Some individual losses range as high as £2OO but not for sveral days will the full extent of the latest visitation -be known.
The flood conditions generally are improving. The Manawatu Gorge and. Pahiatua 'Hill road, where big sdips occurred, are now open.
