Taylor and James were also owners and trainers of last year’s cup winner. The Clipper, which was entered for this year's event, but was withdrawn because of a breakdown. In place cX The Clipper, they nominated Desert Storm, and in the final this dog was defeated toy Dainty Footsteps. Lucky Gold, the winner of the Waterloo Purse, was the only Hawke’s Bay dog' to meet with success and its sire, Real Gold, is the 'New Zealand champion tin-hare racer.
