POWER BOARD STAFF CHAIRMAN’S COMMENTS ANNUAL SMOKE CONCERT The good relations existing ih the staff of the Poverty Bay ElectricPower Board, and as between the staff and the board itself, were the subject of gratified comment by the chairman of the board, Mr. F. R. .Ball, in the course of his reply to a toast at the annual smoke concert organised on Friday night :by the staff social committee. All the town members, and several of the country members of the board were present at the function, held in the Masonic Hall, and the occasion was one of informal enjoyment, io which board members contributed by way of items and anecdotes. The range o.f talent represented by staff and board members was indeed surprisingly large, and the gathering had in addition the privilege of hearing leading guest entertainers.

The chairman, Mr. P. Mann, read a telegram frbm Messrs. Seton Porter and L. W. Potts, former members of tile Poverty Bay board’s staff and now in the employ of th e Lower Hutt board. They sent greetings to old friends.

The toast-list was a lengthy one, and comprised “The King,” proposed by Mr. Mann. "Board Members,” proposed by Mr. R. P. Baigent and responded by Mr. F. R. Ball; “The Staff,” proposed by Mr. S. H. Phillips and replied to by Mr. Geo. Forbes; “Electrical Contractors,” proposed by Mr. H. D. Boddington and replied to by Mr. R. Dolman; “Staff Social Club,” proposed by Mr. F. Matthewsbn and replied to by Mr. Mann; “The Artists,” proposed by Mr. A. G. Banfield and replied to by Mr. W- Wilkie; and “The Press,” proposed by Mr. J. Sutcliffe.

In reference to the toast of the social committee, Mr. Matthewson mentioned particularly the work of the lady members, who, though not represented on this occasibn, were invaluable in their services in connection with other staff functions. The chairman warmly supported Mr. Matthewson’s remarks, and thanked him for his tribute to the lady members.

An orchestra' comprising Messrs. N. J. Redstone, J. Fisher, and S. Ritchie assisted in promoting community singing, led by Mr. W. B. Turbitt, and Mr. S. Lewis provided accompaniments to items by Messrs. W. Wilkie, H. H. DeCbsta, W. Lighten, H. Rangiuia, I. Cameron, W. B. Turbitt, R. Thomson, and J. McLeod.
