REPRESENTATIVE RUGBY VICTORY TO HASTINGS SUPERIOR COMBINATION HOME DEFENCE POOR (Special to tho Herald.) WAIROA, this day. Outplaying their oponents in every department of the game, the Hastings Rugby Sub-Union’s representative fifteen defeated Wairoa by 24 points to 13 in a representative fixture played in Wairoa on Saturday. The visiting backs displayed superior speed and combination, while the forwards harried the Wairoa defence right throughout the game, and showed considerably more enterprise than their opponents. The Wairoa defence was poor and the forwards toiled hard aIL through tho game, but not with very great effect. The teams were:—

Wairoa kicked off and: right from, the outset Hastings attacked and carried play up to the opposition 25, where off-side play on the part of Wairoa gave them an easy chance to open their scoring account, but Riddell’s attempt missed. The visitors continued to press and from a scramble in Wairoa 'territory, CRristy, the Wairoa half-back, secured and kicked downfield, the Hastings full-back, Bligh, taking the ball cleanly and with plenty of time drop-kicked a good field goal from just outside the 25-yard line. Hastings 4 Wairoa 0 Soon after play resumed Garnett, the visiting half-back, was forced to retire from the field with a leg iniury, Tomoana replacing him behind the base of the scrum. Wairoa then took a turn on attack and swept play downfield. From a scrum near the Hastings’ goal-line, Pilmei* worked the blind side to dash over and score a good try in the corner. Hawea missed the kick. Hastings 4 Wairoa: 3 Hastings scored again when, from a scrum on the Wairoa 25-yard line, the visiting backs moved into action and carried play well into oposition territory, Maaka bullocking his way over for a try from a melee. Riddell missed a difficult kick. Hastings 7 Wairoa 3 From the kick-off Wairoa retaliated the forwards, with Helean prominent, dribbling the ball down to the opposition 25. A clearing kick by the visitors was taken by J. Te Ngaio, the Wairoa lull-back, but the effort Was wasted when his kick went too far, Hastings forcings From a scrum, just inside the hallway, Christy set the Wairoa backs in motion, Powdrell. at first fiveeighths, passing to P. Te Ngaio who in turn in-passed to Powdrell again. After a strong run Powdrell delivered the ball do Hawea, who scored a good try in a handy position. Hawea missed the kick. Hastings ‘ Wairoa 11 Good Penally Kick Off-side play on the part of Wairoa enabled Mataira to add another three points for Hastings with _ a good penalty kick from just outside the 25-yard line. 11 Hastings 19 Wairoa 6 From a line-out near the half-way mark P. Smith shot the ball out to the Wairoa backs and Pow'drell, P. Te Ngaio and Harvey gained valuable ground before the ball was passed to P. Smith, who was grassed just short of the line. A rearguaia passing movement saw Hastings carry play well into opposition territory and, accepting a good, pass fiom Riddell, the visitor’s left winger, Joll, dashed up the side-line to sidestep Raureti and score a good try in a handy position. Three Wairoa forwards smothered the kick. Hastings 13 Wairoa • • • • .• • 6 Soon after the resumption of play after half-time Thompson, one of the visiting forwards, was forced 'to leave the field with a leg injury, lusj position being filled by From a line-out almost on the Hasting’s 25-yd. line, Huata broke through with the bail at his toes and carried play right up to the visitors’ goalline, where O’Rourke, who had been following up fast, secured and scored in the corner. Mataira missed a difficult kick. Hastings .. • • • ■ 13 Wairoa 9 . A passing rush by the Hastings backs carried play well into Wairoa territory and, taking a good' pass almost on the line, Hannigan scored in a difficult position. Riddell missed the kick.— Hastings 16, Wairoa 9. Meritorious Field Goal Almost immediately Wairoa carried play into Hasting’s territory and from a melee near the 25-yd. line, Powdrell took a good pass, and, dropping the ball at his toes, kicked a meritorious field goal from almost in front of the posts—Hastings 16, Wairoa 12. A back movement on the part of the visitors carried play well into Wairoa territory. Horton, the right Winger, scoring and. Riddell converting.—Hastings 21, Wairoa 13. A few minutes before time, Hastings again scored when Stanford, the first five-eighth, completed a beautiful back movement by touching down in a difficult position. The attempt at conversion failed.
