FREAK AIRCRAFT
TRUE HELICOPTER AIR MINISTRY’S APPROVAL LONDON, Aug. 2. The design of a true helicopter aeroplane, outstripping all previous attempts, has been adopted by the British Air Ministry. Using a 180 horse-power engine, says the aeronautical correspondent of The Times, it will be capable of rising vertically to a height of 11,000 ft. in 18 minutes. Its climbing rate, therefore, is 10 times as fast as the best helicopter previously produced. Its maximum forward speed will be 100 miles an hour.
‘ The designer, Oskar von Asboth, has completed: the plans of other models, 'including a troop-carrier intended to convey 50 infantrymen at a maximum speed of 23G miles an hour, and dump them on any tiny space behind enemy lines. This model, the correspondent says, will require a 2000-horse-power engine, but it will be capable of lifting nearly three times its structural weight. Construction of the 180-horse-power model will probably be placed in the hands of the Blackburn Aircraft Company, with the designer supervising. The principal .feature of the new model will be two rotors set one above the other on the same standard.
