English Cast
gEVEN British players fill the leading roles in this film, which is based _m an English novel and has an English background. Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce, of course, are both English. Richard Greene and Wendy Barrie supply the romantic interest, and other English members of the cast are Lionel Afwill, Morton Lowry, and Ralph Forbes. One result of this collection of Britons was the appearance of daily lea and crumpets for seven among the items of the cost sheet.
And here is a story that every Sherlock Holmes “fan” will appreciate. At the studio preview of the finished production, Ni.gel Bruce, who knew the author, Conan Doyle, ■/ery well, was deeply impressed by Rathbone’s characterisation of Holmes. “Amazing!” he exclaimed. “Elementary, my dear Watson," replied Rathbone with a smile.
