£25,000 Build Up
ARLEEN WHELAN was a manicure girl. A director noticed her red hair, and persuaded producer Zanuck. to spend £25,000 on a "buildup” for her. She was world-famous . before they had shot a foot of her. She has had three pictures now. First she starred in. "Kidnapped." The latest is a supporting role to Jane Withers. She still has her contract, though. Allan Jones, son of a Welsh miner, hit the peak when he shared the honours of “Firefly” with Jeanette MacDonald and had th c world humming "The Donkey Serenade.” He left that company just after.
Gertrude Michael made 20 pictures in a row in Hollywood and went to
Elstroe. The last heard of her, was in the running for a small part in "Gone With the Wind.” Pat Paterson came from a Francis Laidler pantomime to a Walter Wanger long-term contract. She has not that now, but she lias Charles Boyer for husband instead. Her last part was a small one in “Idiot’s Delight.”
