BASKETBALL FORM

CHAMPIONSHIP PLAY A GRADE CONTESTS OLD GIRLS’ WIN High School Old Girls' clear-cut victory over S'. Mary’s A in the Poverty Bay Basketball Association’s A grade series on Saturday was the result of good combination by the -'"■’ires and forwards and perfect understanding between the players in the defence section. The Hreless efforts •• OH Ocentre trio gave them ? two-to-one share of the ball, and this advantage enabled them to give their goalies many opportunities which invariably led to conversions. A newcomer in Miss J. White made her debut in High School Old Girls’ defence section, and created a very favourable impression for her first game of the season.

For St. Mary's, the individual efforts of Misses N. Miller and B. Sheridan extricated their side from many tight corners. Their combination, however, was disorganised through the absence of Miss Colbert, whose inclusion in preceding games has made St. Mary’s defence their strongest third. St. Mary's centre was their weakest section, the Old ■ Girls' trio dominating this department. Miss M. Murray was the best of the losers’ centres, and in many solo effort? proved herself the equal of her nearest opponent. High School A v. St. Mary’s A Afi'cr their defeat by Old Girls, St. Mary’s A had again to taste defeat at the hands of High School A, An interesting game, with many exciting episodes, was witnessed. The school team early carried play to their opponents’ circle, and in the space of 10 minutes had a lead of seven goals. St. Mary’s took temporary charge just before half-time and drew to within striking distance. On the change-over (he students forced St. Mary’s on the defensive for a long period, launching a series of h'resisible onslaughts which dazzled ‘he opposition and which were capped by brilliant conversions. Miss K. Henderson figured prominently in ail 'hese movements, adding the finishing touches with, confidence. A vacancy in the School’s forward third was filled by Miss W. Milroy. a C grade player, and she played with confidence and displayed agility and skill well above the average. High School A v. Woolworths In an earlier match High School A accounted for Woolworths by a small margin. The students did not unduly exert themselves in this game, probably saving their best efforts for the match against St. Mary’s. H.S.O.G. A2 v. Iluia TTjS.O.O. A?, opened their winning account for the season by defeating Huia’s strongest side by a margin of seven goals. The winners ’threw the ball about at a great pace, using the short, quick pass to advantage. The ■■if'- Mayen v./ 'b a. more oneformation, and avoided the crowding commonly indulged in.
