TO BE SUPPORTED

SECONDARY INDUSTRIES

POSITION IN GISBORNE

WANGANUI AS EXAMPLE

The opinion that the introduction of secondary industries in Gisborne was to be commended- Was voiced by members of the Gisborne Chamber of Commerce at the monthly meeting yesterday afternoon.

The matter was raised by Mr. W. E. Mcllwaine, who commented that when the president of the chamber, Mr. H. 11. De Costa, had previously broached the subject it had been shelved without a full enough discussion.

Mr. Mcllwaine said that the chamber should support secondary industries. He quoted the case of Wanganui, where secondary industries were well established and provided employment for large numbers of people. The matter should not .be allowed to drop and the speaker urged that it should be referred to the executive, of the chamber for. consideration. .

Mr. F. Wise said that Mr. Nisbet, the secretary of the,. New Zealand Manufacturers’ Association; would be in Gisborne at the week-end on a visit of inspection and would call a meeting to be held probably early next week. It was suggested that a branch of the association should be formed in Gisborne, and some information as to the possible development of secondary industries might be obtained.

“We will never attain city status unless we have more local industry,” commented Mr. H. Gilmer, who added that he was in accord with the view offered by Mr. Mcllwaine. that when the subject had been previously raised it had been dropped without sufficient discussion.

A motion moved by Mr. Mcllwaine and second .by Mr. Chrisp, to the effect that the matter be referred to the executive for further consideration, was carried.
