TRAGIC RIO CRASH
FLYING BOAT DISASTER SUNKEN DREDGE STRUCK PLANE CATCHES FIRE RECOVERY, OF BODIES (Eluc. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Reed. Aug. 15, 9 a.m.) RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug. 14. Further reports of the disaster to a Pan-American Airways flying boat yesterday while on the way to Buenos Aires from Miami involving the loss of 14 lives show that the flying boat struck a submerged dredger while landing in semi-darkness. The Hying boat broke into three pieces and caught fire. Ten bodies have been recovered and two are believed to be still in the sunken wreckage. The injuries suffered by the survivors are believed to be of a minor nature.
The dead included the pilot, Mr. A. G. Person, a veteran of millions of miles of flying transport planes and the co-pilot, Mr. George King, who recently had been transferred from the trans-Pacific service, and a Yale University professor.
