MAORI MISSIONS
METHODIST CHURCH WORK
With the approach of the centennial, a survey is being made by the Methodist Church of the work of early missionaries in New Zealand. For almost 20 years before the proclamation of British sovereignty a number of pioneer Methodist missionaries had been working in this .country, and many of them are still remembered. Prominent among them were Samuel Leigh, James Buller and others who. apart from their missionary enterprise, established reputations as students of native flora and natural history of New Zealand. They also collected much information concerning native mythology and customs. Since that time tlie work of the Home and Maori missions has grown until it is now an important part of the church’s programme, claiming the service of many outstanding ministers.
