WOMEN'S INSTITUTES
RONGOMAITAPUI
The Rongomaitapui Institute's monthly meeting, held in the dininghall last Saturday, was well attended. The programme for 1941 J was drafted. The competitions resulted as follows:—Baby's Pram Suit—Mrs. Ngatai, 1. Bread—Mrs. Ngatai ana Mrs. Bristowe, equal, 1.
MATAWAI Tho Malawai Institute's meeting on August 4 was presided over by Mrs. W. Mortlcman. There was a good attendance. „ The visitors Mrs. Wicksteed and Mrs. Wright, both spoke on the aims of tho Institute movement and its progress. The hostesses were Mesdames Smith and Feilder. EAST CAPE The monthly meeting of the East Croc Institute was held on August 0 at the residence of Mrs. G. Goldsmith. Isi, tho absence of Mrs. Henderson, Mrs. Kohere ■presided. There was a fair attendance of members.
The competitions for the month resulted as follows.—Knitting— : Miss Lena White, 1: Miss Pocky Walker, 2. Sewing—Mrs. Dewes, 1; Miss Ora Kohcre and Mrs. Pullen, equal 2. Queen Cakes—Mrs. Pullen, ,1; Miss Becky Walker and Miss Ora Kohcre, equal 2. The hostess was thanked for her lunch and afternoon, tea. RAKAUROA The Rakauroa Institute met on August 4. The president welcomed Mrs. Wicksteed and Mrs. Wright, who were on their annual tour of the district, as well as menders from the Otoko Institute. An interesting paper was read by Mrs. F. C. Shaw on Child Study, which was then discussed by members. A tiny tot from Otoko presented Mrs. Wicksteed with a posy of spring blooms. The winners of the competition were: Baby’s Booties —Mrs. Harris, 1; Mrs. Bell. 2; Mrs. Fielder, 3. KOPUAWHARA The monthly meeting of the Kopuawharn Institute was held on August 3 in the Y.M.C. No. 3 camp, there being a fair attendance. A welcome was extended to Mrs. Highet, a new member of the institute. Sister Kerr gave an interesting address on first aid, and Mrs. Worsfold delivered a talk on munition work during the war. Competitions resulted as follow: — Sausage Rolls—Mrs. Doyle. 1: Mrs. Stewart, 2; Mrs. White, .3. Best Bloom —Mrs. Stewart, 1. Plain Buttonholes—Mrs. 'Hilliard, 1. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Worsfold and Pemberton. TUAI The Tuai Institute held its monthly meeting on August 9 with a good attendance of members. An amusing item was a tap dance by “Sambo and Dina,” two dolls. A competition was won by Mrs. Rosenberg. The social half-hour was in charge of Mesdames Godman and Bumstead.
A demonstration of Italian quilting was given by Mrs. Munro. Results of competitions were:—-Sew-ing: Prettiest Cushion—Mi's. Dunstan. 1: Mrs. McLeod, 2. Peanut Bid's—Mrs. Ro.sen.berg. 1. Best Bloom—Mrs. Munro, 1: Mrs. Godman, 2. The supper hostesses were Mcsdames Prior and Clark. MAKAR AKA - MATAWKERO There . was a good attendance of members at the Makaraka-Matawhero Institute meeting on August 2 to welcome the federation president and secretary, Mrs. W. H. Wicksteed and Mrs. W. A. Wright, respectively. Instructive and helpful addresses were given by both odicials, and members showed keen interest. Members were reminded of entries for exhibition, which are to be sent in to Mrs. Barker, c/o Gisborne Sheepfarmers. The annual institute bail is to be held on September 5. Notice was given of a school for officers, to be held at. Waintti on Saturday. August 5. Votes of thanks were passed to the visitors. MANUTUKE Members of the Manutuke Institute at tlm mon 4 hly meeting last Tuesday celebrated the ninth birthday of the institute. Mrs. Kane presided and welcomed members of the Waerenga-a-hika and Waingake Institutes. The winners of the competitions were Mcsdames Poole and Carrufhers. A welcome was extended to Mesdames Wick deed and Wright, president and secretary of the Poverty Ray Federation committee. Botli gave interesting talks on institute work, which were very helpful and inslruo-
Aflernooti lea was served by the hostesses and a handsome birthday cake with nine candles, which had been made and iced by Mcsdames Dalton and McCliskie, was cut and handed round.
Musical items were given by Mesdames Blondcll. Poole and Carruthcrs, and were greatly appreciated.
MAUNGARONGO
The monthly meeting of theMaungarongo Institute was held at the Pavilion on July 31. Mrs. K. Whin occupied the chair. Visitors present were Mcsdames Collier, Waititi, Sheriff, Tepuni and Walker, Porourangi. and Mrs. Morrell. ’ Hinetapora, Mrs. Tuhou and Mrs. Waikfiri. Mrs. Whin welcomed the visitors. Mrs". Collier suitably replied. It was decided to send Mrs. R. Waihe, vice-president, a tin o£ assorted 'biscuits.
Competitions resulted as follows: Cushion Cover from old stocking - Mrs. A. Tihore, 1; Mrs. R. Terauna, Mrs. P. Reedy, 3. Shortbread—Mrs. R. Terauna, 1; Miss C. Poi, 2; Mrs. R. Terauna, 3. Waikawa Door Mat— Mrs. R. Terauna, 1. Afternoon tea was served.
WHARERATA There was a splendid attendance of members at the monthly meeting of the Wharerata Institute. The gardening circle was presided over by Mrs. W. McGuinness, who read papers on perpetual carnations and points in. potting. After lunch the general meeting was opened by the president, Mrs. O. Swanbrick, who welcomed those present.

Arrangements for a competition for the October meeting were made, and a demonstration of different types of applique work is to be given next meeting.
A physical culture class, conducted by 'Mrs. D. Clark, was much enjoyed. The golden thread talk on Canada was given by Mrs. W. McGuinness, whose address was much appreciated. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mrs. W. McGuinness, and Mrs. F. Hickling. PUHA At the July meeting of the Puha institute Mrs. Baylcy, the president, presided over a small attendance. After a dainty lunch had been sovvecj by members, IMr. Faram. Gisborne, gave a very interesting address on poultry raising. A vote of thanks to the speaker was carried with acclamation. The competition resulted as follows. —Eggless cake:, Mrs. Thompson, 1; Mrs. A. Cameron, 2.
The institute held its birthday party in Puha 'Hall on July 15. There was a large gathering of friends and of members from adjoining institutes. Dancing and cards 'were enjoyed, inter, spersed with musical items. Supper was served by members, a place of honour being given to the birthday cake, baked and ornamented by Mrs. J. MacGregor. Mrs. Bayley, president, welcomed all present. Mrs. McLeod, president of the Whatatutu institute, lit the candles and Mrs. Fisher, Te Karaka, blew them out. ■ Mrs. 'McLeod congratulated Puha institute on a successful year and presented posies of flowers to the president and secretary.
Mrs. Fisher conveyed greetings from Te Karaka, together with a birthday gift- J . , A farewell presentation was made by the president to Mrs. McKay, who is leaving the district, and wished her happiness in her home in Gisborne. ORMOND The Ormond Women’s Institute met on the evening of August 11, in order to meet Mrs. W. A. Wright and Mrs. R. H. Wicksteed, who have almost completed a tour of all the institutes in Poverty Bay. There was a good attendance of members. Mrs. Bowes, the president, called on Mrs. Wright to read the annual report of the Poverty Bay Federaticn and the latter gave an interesting resume and asked several questions. Mrs. Wicksteed also spoke, and before leaving performed a pleasing ceremony by hanging a handsome mirror presented by the dramatic circle in memory of their late convener, Mrs. D. P. Smith.
Several letters were dealt with, including an invitation from the Tolaga Bay Women’s Institute to its meeting next month. A demonstration was given by Mrs. Pardoe on hairpin work, which was interesting. A sale table was well patronised. The roll call, ‘“ways of cleaning a porcelain bath," was well responded to. The amusement was “Irish stories.’’
