Miss Monaghan is a graduate of Canterbury College.

A Family Reunion On Saturday evening Mrs. A. Hansen was hostess at a delightful buffet tea at her home in Harris street, in celebration of her birthday. The gathering took the form of a family re-union, and felicitations and many charming gifts were tendered the celebrant. Decorations of Iceland poppies created a festive atmosphere, and a cheery fire offered a pleasant contrast to the wintry conditions out of doors. Spring flowers were chosen for the adornment of the tea table, the handsome birthday cake making an effective centre-piece.

Mrs. Hansen was wearing a becoming frock of black cloque printed in a floral design in crimson.

Golden Wedding’

A golden wedding of particular interest, inasmuch as the couple concerned are descendants of pioneer citizens o'f New Zealand, took place on 'Saturday, when Mr. and Mrs. William Toomath, of 'Lower Hutt, celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of their wedding. Mr. and Mrs. Toomath were married toy the Rev. John Still at St. Paul’s Pro-Cathedral, Wellington, on August 12, 1889, and on their golden wedding day they had with them their bridesmaid, Miss Amy Toomath, now Mrs. A. G. ISmyth, and the best man, Mr. Ernest Gillon, tooth of Wellington. The other bridesmaid, Miss “Tiny” Mason, now Mrs. Riggar, of Te Hana, North Auckland, was unable to toe present.

Christchurch Party

A 5 o’clock party was given in Christchurch last week by Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Elworthy, Holme station, Timaru, who were in Christchurch for race week. Assisted by their daughters, Mrs. iH. Sinclair-Thomson, of Timaru, and Mrs. Derrick Gould, and by their sen, 'Mr. J. C. Elworthy, they welcomed many guests, who included friends from ail parts of Canterbury, and also North Island visitors who have travelled south to participate in the gaieties of the week. Among the North Island guests were Mr. and Mrs. Brian Boys, Waipukurau, Mr. and 'Mrs. A. H. Hope, Hawke’s Bay, M. F. Vigeveno and Mr. C. Turrell, Wellington, and Mrs. Eric Loisel, Gisborne.

High Commissioner’s Wife

Entertained

“I do not know of any High Commissioner's wife who 'has done a better job than (Mrs. 'Bill Jordan,” recently declared Colonel E. IT. W. Lascelles, chairman of the New Zealand Group of the Overseas League. Mrs. Jordan, who had recovered from a Revere illness, was entertained toy the group at a sherry party in London. Her husband, the High Commissioner, and her son and daughter, Mr. W. Jordan. jun.,'and Miss Gwen Jordan, were also present. Colonel Lascelles congratulated Mrs. Jordan on her recovery. . “We know that she does not only do her own job." he added, “but she does half of her 'husband’s as well. (Laughter.) That is to say, that no High •mmissloner can do his job at all unless lie has a wife to do half of it.” •Mrs. Jordan was presented with a pray of pink roses and ferns —“a combination representing the Mother Country and New Zealand,” said Colonel Lascelles.-

Returning thanks, Mrs. Jordan said how much she appreciated the many kindnesses shown to Her toy (New Zealanders during her illness. Their consideration, she said, was “just marvellous.” She did not regard her life in London as a “job,” tout as a series of pleasures. She was always delighted to .meet New Zealanders at the many functions.

Basketball Dance The Selvyn Hall was en .fete on Saturday night, when the Poverty Bay Basketball Association held a delightful dance for the entertainment of the visiting players from Napier and Opotiki. The supervision of the floor was efficiently carried out by Mr. Webster, and Mr. Pilkington, piano, and Mr. Gooch, drums, supplied the music, each number being repeatedly encored. Extras were contributed by a visitor, Mr. McDougal, Opotiki, and also by two members of the pianoaccordion band, Messrs. Webster and C. Salmon.

A savoury supper was served in formally.

During an interval, Miss C. Mead, president of the Poverty Bay association, took the opportunity, in extending a warm welcome to the visitors, of thanking them for making the journey to Gisborne. Acknowledgment of Miss Mead’s remark; was made by Mrs. Ndrman Potts president of the Opotiki association.

The committee responsible for the successful organisation of the danc comprised Mesdames Muirhead Brodie, Nbrberg, Stevens and Nelson.
