SHIP’S OFFICER’S ILLNESS
OCEAN TRANSFER LIKELY
TASK FOR ACHILLES
(Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, this day. Believed to be seriously ill_ from an internal complaint, an officer of the .American tourist motor ship, Tampa, en route i'rom Sydney to New York, via Panama, will probably be brought to Auckland for medical a.tention by the cruiser Achilles, which will arrive from Niue Island on Friday. Arrangements have been made at the Auckland Hospital to the patient immediately on the ships arrival
Advice of the condition of the officer was received from the Tampa by the motor ship Maetsuyckcr. which arrived here at the week-end. The two ships were then about COO miles apart, the Tampa being nearly a week out of Sydney and the Maetsuyckcr near Norfolk Island. As no ship's surgeon was carried by the Tampa, instructions for the care of the officer were sent by wireless from the ship’s doctor o! the Mnelsuvekcr
Owing to the difficulties of treatment. however, satisfactory progress was not made by the sick man and the Maetsuyckcr suggested that the Tampa should divert her course to Auckland where comp’oto medical attention could be given. The American motor ship was able to get in touch with ilia cruiser Achilles which had .111 -f left Niue Island for Auckland nml. according lo advice later received in Auck-. land, it was probable that Ihe warship would pick up fin- patient. The steaming route across the Paciiic I'rom Sydney to Panama is a fairly short distance south of Niue Island and il is likely that the Achilles was within easy range of the Tampa.
