“FORMING THREES”

USE IN AUSTRALIA

A 1)0 PTION UNLIKE I V

MELBOURNE, Aug. 4.

The manoeuvre of “forming threes,” which is reported to have superseded “forming” fours” in the British Army, is not likely to be adopted in Australia,

Officials of the Defence Department explained to-day that in the British Army everything was now done in three and multiples of three. The use of threes produced simpler manoeuvres. Men marching in column of threes occupied less of the narrow English roads than when in column of fours, and this was probably a factor in making the change.

In Australia, it was stated, Army organisation was based on the figures two and four. “Forming fours,” therefore, was likely to continue as a familiar routine on Australian parade grounds.
