KEEN APPRECIATION
CENTENNIAL PLANS
MEETING OF COUNCIL
Keen appreciation of the handsome centennial fund offer made by the Poverty Bay A. and P. Association was expressed by members of the East Coast Centennial 'Council at a meeting held in the Borough Council chambers yesterday afternoon. The acting-chairman, Mr. Chas. Matthews, presided, other members present being Messrs. R. F. Gambrill, R. P. Baigent, I. J. Quigley, M. J. White, James Chrisp, G. Burns, A. A. Fraser, T. Todd, R. G. Sherwood Hale, K. Te Hau and R. Morse. The National Centennial Council advised that, with a view to facilitating imports of materials for centennial memorials and celebrations not obtain, able in the Dominion, the Government had been approached and the Minister of, Customs hod advised the council that all the necessary steps would ’be taken.
A report on a conference of interested bodies in the Waikanae Park •development scheme was given, to the meeting by Mr. Todd. It was pointed out that the 'P,laii prepared differed somewhat from that suggested 'by the Government Town Planner, Mr. J. W. Mawson, the council deciding to tentatively adopt the plan put in hand and to leave the matter open to enable the views of Mr. Mawson on the subject to be heard. A suggestion that an effort be made to arrange a meeting between. Mr. Mawson and the full council was made by Mr. White and unanimouslyadopted. Committee Reports Reports on the work of the campaign and finance committees were received, while that made by the treasurer, Mr. White, also was received, this pointing out that cash in hand at present amounted to £464 Ss 2d. Reporting on behalf of the celebrations committee. Mr. W. Kohn said that it was imperative to ascertain what finance would be available for spending cn materials for the celebrations. The committee was anxious that Mr. W. S. Wauchop. national director of pageantry, should visit Gisborne to confer with the committee regarding costumes and other items necessary for the pageantry in the celebrations. Reports were also received on. behalf of the native committee and the Waikanae Park development committee, these being presented by Messrs. Te Hau and Todd respectively.
Keen appreciation of the offer of 25 per cent of the profit of the Diamond Jubilee Show as a donation to the centennial fund, made this week by the Poverty EBay A. and P. Association, was expressed by members, all speaking in glowing terms o'f the handsome offer made by the association.
The council approved a motion of the finance committee, to the effect that the inclusion, of the west end district in the Waikanae Beach development scheme be approved, and also approved a claim for subsidy on £ 500 for this work.
