HOT DENIAL GIVEN

SUGGESTION BY LABOUR

INFLUENCE FROM OUTSIDE

NO EASTER CONFERENCE

RETORTS BY MR. HOLLAND

(Parliamentary Report or.) WELLINGTON, this day

On? of the suggestions from the Labour benches during yesterday’s debate in tiie House of Representatives was that the Opposition amendment on repudiation was prompted by outside interests.

Hotly denying this, Mr. S. G. Holland (Nat., Christchurch North), said that the National Party had no Easter conference to instruct its members how to vote. Lots were not drawn to decide who would move a motion. It was eloquently handled by the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes. Mr. C. L. Carr (Lab., Timaru): Let George do it. (Labour laughter). Mr. Holland denied that he had made statements throughout New Zealand saying that the country was bankrupt and unable to meet its obligations. “I believe that the country is solvent and will meet the obligations in spite of the present Government,” he added. Mr. W. .1. Poison (Nat., Stratford): And so does every member of our party. Mr. Holland said that the country had grown apprehensive in respect to the trend and development of political affairs, now there was a cleavage in the Labour Party.

Mr. Speaker said that there had been so much reference Jo the Left Wing that he must now rule out any references in that, direction as tedious repetition.

Mr. Holland suggested that a denunciation of the views of the Labour member for Grey Lynn, Mr. J. A. Lee, was long overdue and that the amendment had had the effect of bringing a reply from tire Government.
