Repairing Gaskets

a copper and asbestos gasket of the type used in some cars for making the joint between the exhaust manifold and the cylinder block has become so distorted in filing that it allows gases to escape, tin? best thing to do is to throw it away and lit a new one. However, there are cases where it is not convenient to do this, and the old one must be repaired. This can be achieved by heating the gasket over a gas flame of lire and quenching in water, a process which will soften the copper. The gasket may then be pulled back into shape. This process also has the beneficial effect of .swelling the asbestos filling, which, on being compressed again between manifold and block, will make an excellent gaslight join .
