FARMERS’ APATHY
SHEEP DOG TRIALS ENCOURAGING SHEPHERDS W AIR-0 A COLLIE CLUB (Special to tlie Herald.) WAIROA, this day. The apathy of some fanners towards sheep dog trials, was the subject of considerable comment by the chairman, Mr. R. J. Powdrell, at the annual meeting of the Wairoa County Collie Club. The chairman stated 1 that there were probably a number of farmers throughout the district who were not altogether in favour of sheep dog trials. Those farmers did encourage their shepherds to participate at the trials, added the chairman, but those same farmers were worried because they could not obtain shepherds. The trials were of great benefit to the farmers, and' if those who did not favour the trials were to encourage the shepherds to attend the contests they would not have the men vacating the farms and going on the public works. It was decided to hold the 1940 trials on the first Monday in April, ■the prize-money for all classes to be: First £6, second £3, third: £2, and fourth £l. It was decided to allott special prizes of £1 10s, £1 and 10s in each class for maiden competitors l - and dogs, there being no extra entry fee. After a lengthy discussion on the suggested improvements and buildings on the trial grounds, it was decided to proceed this year with improve' ir.erJs to the course.
