99 YEARS OLD

Mr. James Joseph Cooper, sailor, Maori War veteran, gold digger and farmer, celebrated his ninety-ninth birthday on Wednesday in Auckland. Born at Cromer, Norfolk, Mr. Cooper went to sea at the age of 13, and arrived at Auckland in 1863 aboard the ship Ironsides. One dark night he swam ashore, walked to Mercer and enlisted for war service, being posted to the Waikato River gunboat Gundagai. After obtaining his discharge, he found his way to the Otago goldfields and later to Hokitika. He.returned to Auckland in 1873, married, and farmed at Pakuranga for the next 30 years, retiring 36 years ago to Onehunga, where he now lives.
