W.I. SOCIAL EVENING GRATIFYING SUCCESS (Herald Correspondent.) Gratifying success attended the social evening held by members of the Bartletts Women’s Institute in the Y.M.C.A. Hall, Bartletts, on Wednesday evening. The night was fine, although chilly outside, but the hall was warmed by a cosy fire. Draperies of brown and yellow, the institute colours, adorned the windows, forming an effective setting, and the programme went with a swing. The members responsible for the successful organisation of the function were Mesdames King, Clanachan, French and Breingan. The first portion of tire programme comprised vocal items, dancing, and two short plays. Mr. B. Ryan opened the programme with a pianoforte solo, other items being: Tap trio, Misses J. Clanachan and M. Lee and Master Lee; song, “In an Old Fashioned Town,” Mrs. J. Clanachan; skipping dance, Mavis Lee; tap dances by Miss Joyce Clanachan and Eric Lee respectively, the accompaniments for all the dance items being played by Mrs. Clanachan; elocutionary items, Mr. F. Mulligan; playette, “The Biter Bit,” Mesdames King, BrifTault, Fouhy, Breingan and Miss J. French; play without words, Mrs. E. A. Smith, Miss J. French and Messrs. Hopkinson, Pearson, Mulligan and Muir. Games and Dancing The home-made supper supervised by Mesdames French, Phipps and Clanachan and other willing helpers provided a pleasant interlude, after which games and dancing occupied the remainder of the evening. A competition for men was for them to try their skill at making a hat from two pieces of coloured paper and five pins. After five minutes they were required to parade in them. The successful entrants were Mr. L. Walters, first, and Mr. Pearson, second. A game of quoits was played toy the ladies, the winner toeing Mrs. Briffault, who received a dainty gift. A Monte Carlo waltz avas won toy Miss Audrey West and Mr. B. 'Ryan. Mr. J. French proved a capable iM.C., and the dance music was played by Messrs. G. King avid B. Ryan. Those present included Mrs. R. 11. Wicksteed and Mrs. W. A. Wright, president and secretary respectively of the Poverty Bay Federation of Women’s Institutes. Feasey, French, Hunter, Heikell, Hopkinson, Hutchins (2), La Hood (2), 'McCaffery, Mulligan, Muir, MeAra, Pearson, O’Donnell (3), Ryan, Whiteford, Walters and King.
