BOTTLED BEER PRICES

ADVANCE OF A PENNY AUCKLANI) DECISION “HANDLES” NOT AFFECTED (Per Press Assnrintinn.l AUCKLAND, this day. An increase of Id. in the price of bottled beer, from Bd. to 9d. for local brands and from 9d. to lOd. for southern, will be made in Auckland from next Monday, according to a decision made at a largely-attended meeting of the Licensed Victuallers’ Association. Beer bought in bulk will be increased by Cd. to ss. a gallon, but no immediate alteration will be made in the price of draught beer sold in handles across the counter. Officials of the Licensed Victuallers’ Association refused to make any statement as to their intentions following .the meeting, but the increases have been confirmed by individual members of the trade. The question of increasing the price of draught beer will be discussed again at an early dale. Many members of the association favour the increase, but it is considered that the only practicable way to carry this into effect would be by reducing the size of the handles. This step would involve scrapping the present large stocks of handles and importing a fresh supply. According to members of the trade, it is doubtful whether the Government, having regard to its import restrictions, would permit the adoption of this scheme.
