AUCKLAND TAXI FARES
NO ADVANCE MEANTIME HIGHER PETROL COSTS (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, this day. 'Until the effect of the increase in the cost of petrol on other forms of transport is ascertained, it is not anticipated that taxi interests will make any move towards reconsideration of the question of fares. Indeed, it is stated, -the position has never been officially discussed by the larger of the two companies operating, and have been no negotiations on the subject by such interests. A conference is pending in Wellington between the New Zealand Taxi Federation and other commercial transport organisations which may conceivably affect the situation, and it is anticipated that the question of increased costs will be discussed at the quarterly meeting of shareholders of the Atta Taxi Company on Thursday next. It is pointed out that the City Council governs taxi fares in Auckland and, while differences of opinion exist among taxi-owners as to whether the business would fall off if the charges were increased to cover the extra outlay on petrol of about 15s. a week on each car, no action is likely to be taken in the matter in the meantime.
