ENGLISH OIL WELL

100 TONS A WEEK NEWARK DISCOVERY LONDON. July 5. More than 109 tons of excellent quality crude oil have been produced in a week from the test well at Eakl'ing, near Newark, Notts. The D’Arcy Exploration Company announced yesterday that oil was encountered at 1914 ft. in sandstone in the coal measures. About 50ft. of “oil sand" has been penetrated. Further drilling will show the extent of this sand. A second well is to be drilled immediately to reach the original objective, tire limestone below the coal strata. In addition to the strike at Eakring, the D’Arcy Company has been producing oil from a number of shallow wells drilled at Formby, Lancashire; where there are surface seepages of oil. The production from these wells is small.
