TESTS OF DEFENCES "RAIDERS" OVER ENGLAND INTERCEPTED BY FIGHTERS THRILLING "DOG FIGHT" (Elec. Tol. Copyright—United Press Asan.J (Reed. Aug. 10, noon.) LONDON, Aug. 9. An Air Ministry' communique covering the air exercises and operations up to 3.30 a.m. to-day says that the "enemy" made 160 "raids," concentrating particularly on the Thames Estuary and the home counties. The "enemy" operated under the worst conditions, with heavy cloud banks and rain belts, sometimes 40 miles in width.
The Eastlanders operated at from 400 fit. 'to 10,000 ft. Light and heavy anti-aircraft guns were continuously working. The southern area alone suffered nearly 100 "raids," 60 fighter patrols effecting a-number- of interceptions. A' heavy' "ra"id"" on Portsmouth was broken up.
The Eastlanders' raids are continuing this morning. Several penetrated the coastal defences under cover of cloud.
Londoners witnessed a thrilling "dog fight," wherein the defenders engaged a squadron of Eastlanders.
