QUEEN CARNIVAL

FLAGS FLOWN TO-DAY MISS P. LANCE LEADING KEEN INTEREST DISPLAYED The Public Service candidate, Miss Peggy Lange, took first position among the centennial queen carnival candidates at the initial mounting of the candidates' flags this morning, Miss N. Henderson, the sports candidate, holding second position, and' the Maori candidate, Miss W. Tureia, third; The R.S.A. candidate, Miss P. Oakden. was in fourth position. '"••• ;

Daily adjustments will be made, to give the public a clear indication of the progress of the campaign, which will close on September 30. Keen interest is being displayed in the event, which has been organised by the Gisborne Thirty-Thousand Club as part of its preparations for next year's centennial celebrations.

The campaign promises to be a spirited one, and strong committees are backing the candidates of the respective nominees. The Public Service candidate was given an excellent start by a function held last Friday evening, when members of the public paid readily to take part in a novelty mtertainment staged in shop premises in the business area, but in the course of the next few days there should be more money available for each of the other candidates as a result of their committees' enterprises.

The Returned Soldiers' Association's candidate, now figuring at the bottom of the poll, is expected to emerge prominently as the campaign proceeds, for her candidature is supported primarily by the social committee of the association, which has previously organised several highly successful public entertainments, and is bent on surpassing its best previous efforts on behalf of Miss Pat. Oakden. Books of voting tickets are being distributed among members of the association and well-wishers, and a further stock of books is available at the headquarters of the association in Read's quay and also at Barwick's Mart.
