SWIMMING BATHS CENTENNIAL PROPOSAL WAIROA COUNTY VIEWS (Spocial lo tho florald.) WAIROA. this clay. The consensus ol' opinion of ralepayers in the county in connection with Wairoa's centennial memorial does not favour a swimming bath, according to the views which were expressed by members of the Wairoa County Council at the monthly meeting yesterday. The question was opened by Cr. S, A. Dickie, who stated that in view of the public meeting lo be held next Monday evening, lie would like to hear the views of councillors. Cr. J. O'Grady said that the rate'aycrs in his riding would not subtribe towards a swimming bath, but •ould support 'lie proposal of a na'crnity annexe. Cr. D. V. Thomas also stated that h'i did not get any support for the erection of a hath, but when a maternity annexe was suggested the ratepayers took notice. The county clerk, Mr, B. G. Signall. pointed out that a maternity annexe would involve a greater cost to the ratepayers than the baths, because of Ihe fact that the annexe would have to be maintained. The chairman, Cr. A. T. Carroll, said that only one suggestion was pit 1 forward at the public meeting held to decide the nature of the memorial. and that was the swimming bath. "This feeling towards the annexe has developed since the first mectng." added the chairman. The clerk said that some of the townspeople themselves were against the baths proposal. They did not favour a fresh water bath, but if it was sea water it would be a different matter. "We have to face up to the burden of a maternity annexe sooner or later and now seems to be a good opportunity to do it," stated Cr. O'Grady. "Candidly speaking I don't think the people in my district want the baths," said Cr. W. Tail. Cr. Thomas: Why not buy the local aerodrome with the money? The chairman stressed the need for unanimity and stated that the baths when established would be of benefit to Wairoa. Country children as well as town children would be catered for.
