The monthly flag five-Ihundrod party organised ,bv the Mangapapa Guide Hall Committee was held in the Scout and Guide Hall on Tuesday night, and, as usual, met with gratify--1 ir.g success. Six .tables were in .play, and honours .were annexed by Mesdames C. Maunsell, Boys, A. Clare, and Miss H. Watkins. The prize for the highest number of flags was won by Miss If. Watkins, and Mrs. Steed emerged the winner of the travelling envelope competition, while another prize was awarded to Miss Peyton. The tournament was efficiently supervised 1 by Mrs. Mclvor, to whom .he committee is greatly indebted. A delicious home-made supper was serve d triform a 1 ly. Poverty Bay Ladies’ Golf Club In view of the pleasant weather conditions prevailing on Tuesday it was decided by the committee of the Poverty Bay Ladies’ Golf Club to hold the scaled partners' match, postponed from the previous week, for trophies donated by Mrs. W. it B. Willock. Honours were annexed by Mrs. D. E. Chrisp, and Mrs. .1. W. Mclldowie, was a combined net score of 152 each competitor receiving a trophy. Tiie match for unqualified players arranged for Tuesday morning was won by Miss J. Tietjon, who also was awarded a trophy presented by Mrs Willock. Playintr in a match for week-end members, Miss D. McDiarmid secured first place. St. John’s Ladies’ Guild The monthly meeting of St. John’s Anglican Ladies’ Guild was held in St. John's Hall, Mangapapa, on Tuesday afternoon, Mrs. A. Clare presiding over a large attendance of members.
A vote of sympathy was passed with the relatives of the late Mr. Redward, members standing in silence. A delightful social hour was enjoyed. Two competitions provided amusement in variety, and the winners, Mrs. Burch and Mrs. F. P.. Hall, were each suitably rewarded. It was announced that a card party for the benefit of the funds' of the guild would be held on the evening of Tuesday, August 29, r.nd that the next guild meeting had been set down for September 12.
A delicious afternoon tea was .served by Mrs. Williams. Birthday Party Fun and frolic prevailed at the jolly children's party given by Mrs. Tod McKeague at her home in Aberdeen road on Saturday afternoon in celebration of the third birthday of her tiny daughter, Gae. The weather was all that could be desired for such an occasion and the pleasant scene was watched by a number of parents, who enjoyed the fun quite as' much as the younger generation. A bran tub was a source of delight, and a "treasure" hunt and races were entered into with enthusiasm, each competitor receiving a prize. Coloured streamers and balloons decorated a marquee erected on the lawn, and here a gay company sat down to a wonderful party tea. The table, laden with all the good things dear to childhood, was adornea with quaint favours, and the handsome birthday cake, surmounted by three candles, was cut by the small celebrant. ' The hostess was wearing a smartlytailored frock of mauve and white checked linen, and her daughter wa an attractive figure in a grey knitted suit with scarlet trimmings and embroidered peasant apron. Wall wore also heard to advantage in a vocal duet, and another much-enjoyed number was a pianoforte duct by Mr. and Mrs. Hambly. The accompaniments were played by Miss Ray and Messrs. Birchnall. P. Women's National Reserve On Tuesday afternoon Mrs. W. E. Goffe presided over a fair attendance of members at the monthly meeting of tlie Gisborne branch of the Women's National Reserve, held in the Parish Hall, Derby street. Remits for presentation at the conference of the National Council 01 Women, which takes place in Christchurch in September, were placed before the members, the majdritj meeting with approval. Sympathy with Mrs. Aylward, whe recently met with an accident, wai voiced and hopes were expressed foi ner speedy recovery. The president reported that the Parish Hal! would be available on August 25 for .a sale which the reserve is holding for the benefit 01 its funds. ■'Members were reminded that Wednesday, August 16, had been set aside for the collection and packing of gifts for the annual hamper for the inmates of the Porirua Mental Hospital A number of donations, together with promises, already have been received for this worthy cause. Afternoon tea was served informally at the close of the meeting. Repertory Society A large and appreciative audience filled the Gisborne Repertory Society's club-room on Monday night, when three one-act plays were presented, two by members of the society and the third by the dramatic circle of the Gisborne High School. The first production, a comedy representative of slum life, was excellently portrayed by Mesdames W. A. iJowie and W. Kohn; Misses C. Omar., .... Godfrey and R. Sinclair, and Messrs. .i. On Monday afternoon Miss A. L. Rees presided over a large attendance of members at the monthly meeting of the Poverty Bay Victoria League, held in the Bon Accord tea rooms. •Mrs. Baty was elected a life-member in recognition of her services to tine league over many years. Ten new members, Mesdames G. Bums J. O. Musgrave, It. W. T. Buckley, J. Thompson. R. Morse, S. Beaufoy, Stockman, Mcintosh, A. F. Excell and Miss M. Barnard, were elected. The speaker for the afternoon was Dr. W. A. Bowie, whose interesting address on his recent tour abroad was Lollowed with the closest attention. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to Dr. Bowie, the motion being carried oy acclamation. A letter was received from the Wellington league announcing the resignation of the secretary, Mrs. Barrington Smylhe, and the appointment of Miss J. Barr, 0.8. E., as her successor. The secretary was instructed to write expressing the pleasure of the members of- the local league at the appointment of Miss Barr, who is well known in the Gisborne'district. A report of the annual meeting of the Victoria League held in London was forwarded by the Gisborne delegate, Mrs. F. B. Gibson, a descendant of a local pioneer family. Message to Early President A communication was received from headquarters requesting the president and secretary to sign a world-wide message to Lady Jersey, an early president of the league, for presentation, in book form, on the occasion of her ninetieth birthday. An appeal for literature, on behalf of the boo'k and magazine committee, was made by Mrs. Baty, who reportcu the dispatch of 79 parcels during the
past month to settlers in the backblocks. The secretary was instructed to write to Mesdames T. A. Crawford. H. W. Black. W. 11. Chrisp and J. W. McDonald, expressing the sympathy of the league in their illness. The formation of a hospitality committee was discussed, and it was decided that the members of this committee should entertain the members elected each month with a view to their gaining a knowcldge of the ideals of the league and also becoming acquainted with the members of the executive. Pleasure at the hospitality extended to her by the Auckland league was voiced by Mrs. M. Lawless. A letter was forwarded to the Thirty-Thousand Club in regard to the celebration of the anniversary of the landing of Captain Cook in Poverty Bay. Nomination papers for the election of officers, which takes place on Monday, September 4, were distributed to members, further supplies being obtainable from either the treasurer, Mrs. T. Y. Cuthbert, or the secretary, Mrs. F. Wickens.
Donations towards the Christmas fund for the inmates of the Heni Materoa Children's Home and the patients in the children's ward at the Cook Hospital were acknowledged by Mrs. E. Irowell. The secretary reported having attended a meeting convened by the Winter Show committee in regard to the procuring of a hall, in conjunction with local organisations, suitable for the'staging of the annual Show. Afternoon tea was served at the close of the meeting, Coming-of-aye Celebrated On Saturday night, the coming-of-oi Miss Marion McCallum, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D. McCalmvcl, was celebrated in a delightful manner at the. Bon Accord tea rooms. Dancing was enjoyed to music supplied by Mr. and Mrs. McKinnon. and vocal numbers were contributed by Mr. TurbiUt and Mr. Sloan. Community singing also was entered into with enthusiasm under the .eadership of Mrs. Hunter. A delectable supper was served, aid ailter the customary toasts had been honoured, Miss McCallum was presented with a golden key and a lovely bouquet by her nephew. Donald McCallum. Attractive and useful gifts were received by the celebrant, who charmingly thanked her friends. Mrs. McCallum received her daughter's guests wearing a graceful frock of navy blue sheer, and a gold coatee. Miss" McCallum chose a smart frock of cyclamen chiffon, and a coatee of white fur. Business & Professional Women The fortnightly meeting of the Gisborne Business and Professional Women's Club was held in Le Grand Cafe on Tuesday night. Miss H. Winters presiding over an attendance of 58 members. The speaker for the evening was Miss Patrick, who gave a most interesting and instructive address on chiropody, and also answered a number of questions asked by members. Miss Winters thanked Miss Patrick on behalf of the club," and members showed their appreciation by acclimation. It was announced that Miss O. Bannister would take the chair at the next meeting, and that Dr. Thco. Hall would be the speaker.
