WINTER AT SOUTH POLE

PLANS OF ELLSWORTH ARGENTINE AGITATION (Reed. Aug. 7, 9 a.m.) .NEW YORK, Aug. 6. Before leaving for Norway to secure a base ship to replace the Wyatt Earp, Mr. Lincoln Ellsworth announced his plans to spend the winter of 1940-41 at the South Pole. "I would like to dig into the polar icecap to see what can be learned of the Antarctic weather,” he said. “The various layers beneath the surface

should be as revealing historically a, the rings of a tree.”

The fifth Ellsworth expedition will be independent of the Government expedition under .Rear-Admiral R. E. Byrd, but they will co-operate closely.

The Buenos Aires correspondent of the New York Times says that the Argentine public is vigorously demanding that the Government should send an expedition to the Antarctic to protect its territorial claims. It is suggested that a naval transport which is relieving observers at the Argentine observatory i.n the South Orkneys should continue to the Weddell Sea.
