ROSE BOWL VICTORY
TRIBUTE FROM NAPIER The recent success of the Poverty Bay Football Association’s representatives in their match with Hawke’s Bay for the East Coast Rose Bowl is the subject of congratulatory comment by the soccer writer of the Napier Daily Telegraph, who incidentally remarks that the Hawke’s Bay team were fortunate not to have a bigger score registered against them by the fast-moving Gisborne team. “Right from the kick-off the game was fast and clean, and the refereeing was of a particularly high standard. The referee seemed to notice everything, and was fair to both sides, there being no complaints whatever on the score of his control,” he writes.
“Although our team played well, it was not the better team on the day. The Poverty Bay forwards were a treat to watch, and I wish that all forwards of our local teams had been there to see the co-operation they practised. Bridge, the ex-All Black centre-forward, gave a good demonstration. He did not hunt the ball, but 'was always in position when it was centred to him. He scored three of the goals for Poverty Bay. Waugh was again in evidence, and It is hard indeed to select individuals from a side which gave such a fine display. The backs were very good, especially the centre-half, who always placed' the ball to his forwards’ best advantage. The goalie, 100, deserves much credit for his performance.
“To my mind, the Hawke's Bay team was lucky to get off as easily as it did. This does not mean that our team was not good, but on the day the other side was truly superior.”
