INSTITUTE PARTY ELEVENTH BIRTHDAY (H«raid Correspondent.) The Patutahi Hall presented a gay scene on Wednesday afternoon, the occasion being the eleventh birthday of the Women's Institute. The guests included many old members and .also members of the Gisborne Choral Society, the Holy Trinity Mothers’ Union, and Ngatapa Women's Institute. The hall had been decorated in autumn tones by the gardening circle members and. looked very festive. Mrs. J. Atkins welcomed the visitors.

Mrs. E. M. Monckton, vice-president of the Ngatapa institute, presented Mrs. Atkins wit'll a bouquet, and Mrs. D. Williams, on behalf of the same institute, donated a trophy for the decorative section in the forthcoming flower show. Mrs. E. R. Renner and Mrs. A. Waddell, on behalf of the gardening, improvement and dressmaking circles respectively, presented gifts to the institute and Victorian posies to Mrs. Atkins, president, and Mrs. Walker, secretary.

During the afternoon a pianoforte solo was played by Miss L. Scragg. Two pleasing solos were rendered by Mrs. I. Morrow, accompanied by Miss Scragg.

Members oif the Holy Trinity Mothers’ Union then presented .a very amusing playetce, “Bluebeard s Wives,” which was well produced.

Afternoon tea was: served from long tables decorated in the institute colours, orange and green, pride of place being given to the two-tier birthday cake, also decorated in the institute's colours in a pale toning. Mrs. D. S. Williams, a past president of the institute, lit the candles, Mrs. A. F. Hall blew them, out, and Mrs. F. E. Humphreys, president of Ngatapa institute, cut the cake. During the remainder of the afternoon novelty competitions caused much amusement, Mrs. A. Waddell, Mrs. H. Monteith and Mrs. P. Saggers being the winners.

A cake estimating competition was won by Mrs. Walker, the popular secretary.

The monthly competitions resulted: — l Novelty from scraps of wool: Miss R. Atkins, 1; Mrs. F. Lange, 2; Mrs. A. Jones, 3. Calendulas: Miss Manson, 1; Mrs. Stubbings, 2; Mrs. F. Lange, 3.

It was announced that the monthly meeting of the institute would be held next Thursday evening, when Mrs. R. H. Wickstead and Mrs. W. A. Wright would address members.

Mrs. .1. O'Dowd, Waipukurau, is visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. H. Ritchie.—Miss S. McCullough, Waipawa who has been staying for some time with Mrs. F. Habgood, has returned to her home.—Mr. and Mrs. W. McCullough, Waipawa, who have been guests at “The Vicarage, have ■.eft for their home.
