WOMEN’S HOCKEY

draw for tournament POVERTY BAY IN A GRADE SOME STIFF OPPOSITION Poverty Bay has been drawn in the A grade tor the New Zealand women’s championship hockey .tournament to be held in Blenheim at the end of the month, according to advice received by Mr. H. Le Bas, chairman of the Poverty Bay Association’s executive. In that grade, Poverty Bay wilt have some stiff opposition, including Canterbury and Auckland, who were considered to be among the three strongest teams' in last year’s tournament, held in Gisborne. Ashburton, the runners-up last year, are in the same grade, while Feilding also had a strong side last year. Marlborough A completes the grade, and if that association decides to place its strongest team in that section, it should prbve further formidable opposition for the Gisborne girls. _ However, Poverty Bay should be stronger than last year, and at the worst none of the opposing sides should overwhelm the Gisborne representatives. On present indications Poverty Bay should win more matches than it loses, while the leadership of the section does not seem an impossibility. No advice has been received yet regarding the total number of teams in the tournament, but it is believed that it' Will be approximately the same as the 16 which competed in Gisborne last year. A Grade Draw The draw announced for the A grade is given as follows: — Saturday, August 26.—-Feilding • v. Poverty Bay: Auckland v. Asnourton; Canterbury v. Marlborough A. Monday, August 28— Feilding v. Auckland: Poverty Bay v. Canterbury; Ashburton v. Marlborough A. Tuesday, August 29.— Feilding v. Ashburton; Poverty Bay v. Marlborough A, Auckland v. Canterbury. Wednesday, August 30.— Feilding v. Canterbury; Auckland v. Marlborough A; Ashburton v. Poverty Bay. Thursday, August 31—Feilding v. Marlborough A; Ashburton v. Canterbury; Poverty Bay v. Auckland. The semi-finals will be played on the Friday and the finals on the Sa* urday. •
