LEADING TRAINERS GEORGE HEADS LIST REMAR KAB LE R ECOR D LOCAL MENTOR'S SUCCESS By “Trenton" When T. It. George bonded the list of winning trainers for the season just closed it was no new experience for him, as during the past 10 seasons ho has been at the head of the list on no fewer than eight occasions. During the past 10 seasons George’s stable has produced a total of 323 winners. The Makaraka trainer I. Tinsley is in fourth place with a total of 23 winners, and this reflects great credit on this mentor, as the situation of his establishment handicaps him considerably as regards travelling when compared with those above him on the list. The principal winners for the 193839 season are:— •T. R. George 4-1, H. Dulieu 31. L. G. Morris 29, I. Tinsley 28, H. S. Greene 27, F. A. Roberts 24, Mrs. A. McDonald 23, F. Smith 22, M. Conza 21, S. J. Reid 21. H. and A. Cults 20. E. J. Ellis 20, L. Knapp 20, H. Telford 20, G. W. Greene 18, A. E. Didham 17, J. Ross 17, D. P. Wilson 17, F. Christj mas 16, F. W. Ellis 15, A. E. Neale 15, 11. Nurse 15. Riders at Riccarton W. J. Broughton has been engaged to ride Dungarvan, Indian Sun, and Ruling Spi (second day) at Riccarton rext week. G. R. Tattersall’s mounts will include Waka and Yours Truly. W. Jenkins will be on Catalogue, Monipere, and Raeewell. Horses Depart y Tidewaiter and Aurora’s Star have left for Riccarton. Old Surrey is not making the trip and is to be schooled. By Hunting Song, he may do well in this new role. Early Arrivals Ellanui and Jewelled Girdle are already at Riccarton and are reportec to be doing well. Nightcalm’s Rider M. Caddy is a possibility to ride Nishtcalm in the Winter Cup. Third Was Lucky The North Island jumper A. E. Lord had a mixed experience at Riccarton on Saturday. His two mounts in steeplechases ended abruptly, Redolent and Power Chief suffering injuries when they fell which made n necessary to destroy them. Later in the day he had a happier result, when he won the Longbeaeh Hurdles on Aussie Ra. Amateur Rider In view of Mr. G. G. Beatson’s association with Padishah, it may ibe recalled that only one amateur horseman has ridden the winner of the Grand National Steeplechase. That was Mr. Martelli, Timaru, who rode the first winner, Royalty, in 1376. Strange Double Many strange doubles will be laid on the two Clips. Caulfield and Melbourne, during the next few months. I says an Australian writer. Here is an example: A well-known Melbourne tailor and a bookmaker were discussing the possibility of war and *he un shot of a friendly argument was tb fielder laying his tailor this double c £2OO to £2—Ajax in the Melbourne Cup and “no war” by the first week r November. Trainer Retires The well-known Marton trainer a T. Morris has decided to retire, am did not apply for a license this season. Morris announced recently tha 1 throughout his career as a jockey and trainer, which lasted over 50 years, he was never called before the stewards even for a minor breach of the rules. He rode in races for 30 years and only gave up riding when his son, B. H. Morris, became a jockey. During his career, Morris trained three very successful apprentices. The first was Bert. Morris, one of our most accomplished riders. Next was L. G. Morris, now established a-s a trainer at Awcipuni, whose riding record during 19 seasons of 637 firsts speaks for itself. The other apprentice was R. C. Miles, and. in addition, there was the finished gentleman rider, J. F. Morris. During his career Morris preparer winners of many important races. P 1919 Master Lupin, ridden by A. McDonald, won the Great Northern Steeplechase, and Omahit beat all tou 1 Sea De’il in 1922. Omahu, ridden e a ■filmic by L. G. Morris, scored twice in the Wellington Steeplechase, and, wit'A McDonald up, he won the Winter Hurdles at Trentham. Alan McDonald was with Morris at Marlon for ovei 15 years. Another good winner was the versatile performer Ngala, who won tlie Wanganui, Marton and Foxton Cups. Morris declares that Ngakwas the best ho ever trained and tha! he was a really wonderful horse who showed his versatility by racing over hurdles and then being able to come back to the flat to win the Wanganu - Cup in record time, which he could have bettered.
