REBUILDING OF RENOWN
WORK OF THREE YEARS ARMAMENT REINFORCED (Reccl. July 31, 9 a.m.) LONDON, July 30. After three years in Portsmouth dockyard, where .she has been almost rebuilt, the warship Renown is undergoing her trials. The reconstruction, which radically altered her appearance, cost £3,088,000, which equals the ship’s original, .cost. 'Her .main armament of i>ix 1 Sin. guns ntemainls, but her secondary armament and anti-ait - craft defence have been greatly strengthened. The Renown was completed in 1910, and cost £3,117,204. She was refitted in 1919-20 ait a cost of £100,738, and again in 1921-22 at a cost of £175,518. In ,1923-25 she was reconstructed, with the addition of "bulges” for torpedo protection and other work, which cost nearly £.1,000,000. The Renown’s sister-ship, the Repulse, which also, cost originally over £3,000,000, had a major refit lit 191822 costing £800,084, and in 1932-36 she was reconstructed at a cost of £1,377,748. The present alteration to the Renowin, on which, including her original cost, about £7,500,000 has now been spent, included the provision of new engines, increase of anti•ilrcrafi .armament, provision of aero--'n-o hangars cranes and catapult, and a new system of boat stowage.
